About the Water Reticulation Practitioner course
The Occupational Certificate: Water Reticulation Practitioner develops the technical and practical skills needed to install, operate and maintain water-distribution infrastructure from the water reservoir through to the household supply point.
Learners develop capability across pipes and pipe joining, valves, pumps, water meters, leak repairs, tools and equipment, system maintenance, workplace safety and the supervision of water-reticulation teams.
Who is this qualification for?
The qualification is suited to people entering the water-services environment as well as employees already performing water-reticulation work who need to formalise or extend their occupational competence.
SAQA specifically identifies school leavers and people already working in water reticulation as typical learners, including employees performing related functions within municipalities.
What will you be able to do?
On completion of the qualification, learners develop the ability to:
- Prepare water-reticulation installations: interpret work instructions, plans and specifications, organise materials and equipment and identify site risks.
- Install water infrastructure: undertake activities involving trenches, pipes, pipe joining, valves, pumps, meters, testing and reinstatement.
- Operate and maintain reticulation systems: inspect infrastructure, perform preventative and emergency maintenance and repair leaks and faulty components.
- Work safely around water infrastructure: identify hazards and apply appropriate safety procedures during installation and maintenance.
- Manage a water-reticulation team: allocate work, communicate instructions, monitor performance and coordinate tasks effectively.
How is the qualification structured?
The Water Reticulation Practitioner qualification combines three substantial areas of occupational learning:
Knowledge (65 credits)
Covers workplace fundamentals, water-reticulation systems, tools and equipment, lifting operations, pipe systems, valves, pumps, meters and system operation and maintenance.
Practical skills (57 credits)
Develops hands-on capability in using equipment, lifting materials, installing and testing infrastructure, responding safely to emergencies, maintaining systems and supervising a team.
Workplace experience (114 credits)
Requires learners to apply installation, operation, maintenance and team-management processes in an actual water-reticulation environment.

What are the entry requirements?
Learners need an NQF Level 2 qualification with Mathematical Literacy to enter the Water Reticulation Practitioner qualification.
Because the occupation involves physical infrastructure work, the registered qualification also specifies that learners must be able to see, hear and be physically capable of carrying out the required occupational tasks. Recognition of Prior Learning may be used where applicable.
Is workplace experience required?
Yes. Workplace experience is a major compulsory component of the qualification and accounts for 114 of the total 236 credits.
Learners gain real-world experience in installing water-reticulation infrastructure, operating and maintaining the system and managing team members. This means workplace application represents almost half of the qualification’s total credit value.
How is the qualification assessed?
Learners complete the required internal knowledge, practical and workplace components before progressing to the External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA).
The external assessment includes written and practical tasks in a simulated environment and takes place at a QCTO-accredited assessment centre over a minimum period of two days. Learners must provide evidence that the required modules and workplace experience have been completed before entering the assessment.
